Garden Flowers - Wall Valerian

Wander around practically any English walled garden, ruined castle or folly and you will find, growing from the crumbling masonry these pretty red, pink and white flowers!

Wall Valerian or Centranthus ruber is a tough flowering perennial which is found happily growing out of old stone walls, rocky cliffs and dry cracks in stone paving, any where its roots can take hold in soft mortar.

Its found in both pink, ruby red and white forms which are all natural colours for this pretty plant.

This pretty plant is originally native to the Mediterranean region and has travelled to many other parts of the world as a garden escape where it thrives in free draining chalky or sandy substrate (walls).

The story goes, that in the UK it may have received a helping hand from the famous gardener Gertrude Jekyll who pioneered the practice of loading the seeds of this plant in to a shotgun shell and firing them at the steep rocky hill sides and walls of Lindisfarne Castle when designing and over seeing the planting of its gardens in the 19th and early 20th century\'s.

A practice still used in conservation to get seeds in to those hard to reach crevices.... a challenge we all no doubt, run in too at one time or another.

These medium resolution plants are suitable for use in small scatters or by placing them individually, for larger scatterings they are accompanied by three single stem ultra low resolution plants for scattering in large numbers (no need to break out the shot gun here!).

And as always a little goes a long way and one plant and its instances can look like many when slight variations in both scale and rotation values are applied.

The plants in this bundle consist of both upright growing clumps and single plants and clumps which will grow from a horizontal origin above the ground plane to assist in placement on more vertical surfaces.

So cover your walls in some tough but pretty flowers !
