In this course you will learn a simple method that will allow you to create realistic portraits using professional pencils and paper.-You will learn how to use key points to create the outline of your character-How to create a shadow map to divide the different areas of the face- How to do the shading processWHY DRAW A PORTRAIT IF YOU ALREADYDOES THE PHOTOGRAPH EXIST?Ever since photography was invented in the 18th century, there has been an intensedebate about whether there is a need for drawing and paintingrepresent reality in a naturalistic way, since the camerait does (supposedly) much better.But we have to understand that a portrait is not a photo of aperson, is an interpretation of that person through themind of an artist and that interpretation in my opinion, is more realthan the mechanical interpretation of a camera.For thousands of years man has seen the same objects: horses,bulls, trees, faces, people, etc. And for thousands of years the artists of each generation have found different ways of representingthese objects.Colombian maestro Fernando Botero, one of the greatestcontemporary artists, says that if we want to create our own style,we have to be able to represent something as simple as aorange in a way that is totally personal and that anyoneseeing it can recognize who created it. In (Fig I.3)we can see how master Botero solves this problem bydraw an orange with your style clearly distinguishable.Learning to represent a face realistically will help usunderstand the basic principles of drawing: perspective,proportions, composition, line, shading, etc.Understanding the fundamentals and principles is essential toto be able to create a clearly distinguishable pictorial language (style).That is why in this course we are not going to see only the steps, asif we were making a kitchen recipe, but we are going tooccupy ourselves with understanding what are the problems that we have to solveat each step and we will propose a solution.Understanding the problem will in turn allow you to propose other solutions.different from those proposed in the course, since mastering the method thatI will teach you in the following chapters will give you a starting point forbe able to experience later.
